Revenue Is Growing, But Profit Isn’t
A lot of businesses are busier than ever and somehow still broke. Here’s what’s actually going on.
Sales are up. New customers are coming in. The team is stretched thin. But at the end of the month, the profit line barely moves. Sometimes it goes backward.
This isn’t rare. It’s one of the most common places growing businesses get stuck chasing revenue while the bottom line quietly bleeds out.
Busy doesn’t mean profitable
Costs don’t scale neatly. Every new customer brings new demands. Every hire brings overhead. Every tool you add has a renewal sitting twelve months out. Growth has a bill attached to it, and that bill tends to arrive before the profits do.
Pricing makes it worse. A lot of businesses set prices on instinct or by copying competitors without ever mapping out what it actually costs to deliver the thing. Thin margins don’t get fixed by volume. They get worse. Every discount, every underpriced contract, every scope that quietly expanded without a rate adjustment compounds the problem.
The P&L can lie to you
Even when the financials look healthy, the bank account can tell a different story. Customers paying late ties up cash already counted as revenue. Inventory locks money in a warehouse. Poor receivables management means you’re financing your customers’ operations with your own working capital.
Cash flow problems almost always show up during growth right when you have the least capacity to deal with them.
What actually fixes it
Know your real cost-to-serve. Build a rolling budget that projects expenses at each stage of growth, not just where you are today. Run a 13-week cash flow forecast and update it weekly. Review margins by product and customer segment not just top-line revenue. And make cost discipline a habit before it becomes a crisis.
Here at Accounts Daddy we help businesses turn revenue into real profit. From cash flow forecasting to cost control systems, we give you the financial foundation to grow without the chaos. If your numbers aren’t telling a clear story yet, let’s fix that.
Revenue builds momentum. Profit builds the actual business.
